During the course of a lifetime, the average moviegoer will hear thousands of film scores, of which only a handful will register strongly. Karlin, concentrating here on instrumental scores rather than songs, targets the lay reader with no prior musical training. First, he explains the technical means by which a film's music is composed, recorded, and mixed. Next, he discusses what to listen for and how to evaluate a film score, using the music of eight popular films as examples. Karlin also includes an overview of the composer's role, from the era of silent films to the present, as well as personal profiles of the composers. Appendixes covering a list of soundtrack shops and vendors, a filmography, and a list of Academy Award winners and nominees add to his guide's usefulness as a resource. Informative but far from dry, this book should be in any serious film collection.

There are few books about movie music, but most of them are good. Ditto Karlin's, which, striving for comprehensiveness, covers how film music is composed, recorded, and mixed into a soundtrack; how to listen to it appreciatively; how it actually functions in eight movies famous for their music (including such classics as The Adventures of Robin Hood [1938] and North by Northwest); how it has been reviewed by intelligent critics; and how it was and is used in silent and nondramatic sound films. And after all that, it's only half over! Karlin now puts on a business-chronicler's hat to discuss movie musicmaking under the Hollywood studio system and subsequently as a freelance occupation, the Oscars for music and how they're awarded, and the commercial importance of songs and soundtrack recordings. The book's last two sections are a short chronology of film-music history and, prefaced by some comments on "How They Got Started," a listing of selected film composers and (only) some of their credits. Appendixes include a list of soundtrack shops and vendors and a worthy annotated bibliography. Ray Olson

Attention: Film-music lovers !

This is an absolutely fantastic chronology of film music through the ages... from the silent era to the "John Williams" era to today.

This book makes for entertaining and informative reading with quotes from so many in-the-industry sources that your head will spin!

It's the most up-to-date reference I've found so far on film-scoring techniques and the problems historically associated with this genre.

I'd even recommend it to film-goers with a just a passing interest in music as well

This is not a book teaching how to write a film score. Instead, it shows how film scores are conceived, created, and recorded, and is written for any enthusiast to enjoy. There are chapters covering who does what, how they do it, the machines involved, and case studies of several films with notable scores. In addition to explaining current practice, the book includes historical material about the legendary film music of the old-time studios and their staff composers and orchestras. The appendix section has guides to various composers listing their works, and a list of movies listing their composers. You can even look up Academy Award winners from each year! This is a fun book to sit and browse through.

Very good book, nice collection of Jewish music

Very good book, nice collection of Jewish music, definitely good for song references, for lyrics and also just for fun - remembering some songs, maybe learning a new one. I like it very much. Maybe missing some newer ones, but one can't always be up to date.

NOT for the Piano

I'm just learning piano and ordered this book to play the piano, but it doesn't have the bass notes, only the treble. I have to say I was very disappointed when it arrived as I can't use it. However, it does have guitar notes so hopefully, my daughter can use it.

Alfred's Basic Country Piano Book Level 1 has some really fun selections that offer a challenge beyond the other level one books. While I could sight read many of the numbers in the sacred and popular collections, I have had to really work on most of these because they include conventions of country music not commonly used in other genres: the addition of grace notes, certain styles of bass playing reminiscent of guitar picking, the use of parallel thirds and sixths rather than simple chords and thirds, harmony above the melody in some cases. I am quite certain, however, that once I learn the songs, I will enjoy playing them. The first four songs are pretty simple songs written in C. The rest of them have either a syncopated melody or a challenging bass pattern or some accidentals to be aware of. Many of these conventions did not appear in the regular lesson book. Songs in order of appearance are "Beautiful Brown Eyes," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," "I Wish I Was Eighteen Again," "Old Joe Clark," "Worried Man Blues," "Your Cheatin' Heart,"
"Cold,Cold Heart," "Swingin'," "King of the Road," "Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," "Make the World Go Away," and "Green, Green Grass of Home." I would recommend this book to any beginner who would like a challenge.

Part melodrama and part parable, Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven weaves together three stories, all told about the same man: 83-year-old Eddie, the head maintenance person at Ruby Point Amusement Park. As the novel opens, readers are told that Eddie, unsuspecting, is only minutes away from death as he goes about his typical business at the park. Albom then traces Eddie's world through his tragic final moments, his funeral, and the ensuing days as friends clean out his apartment and adjust to life without him. In alternating sections, Albom flashes back to Eddie's birthdays, telling his life story as a kind of progress report over candles and cake each year. And in the third and last thread of the novel, Albom follows Eddie into heaven where the maintenance man sequentially encounters five pivotal figures from his life (a la A Christmas Carol). Each person has been waiting for him in heaven, and, as Albom reveals, each life (and death) was woven into Eddie's own in ways he never suspected. Each soul has a story to tell, a secret to reveal, and a lesson to share. Through them Eddie understands the meaning of his own life even as his arrival brings closure to theirs.

Albom, newspaper columnist and radio broadcaster, is, of course, best known as the author of the astonishingly successful Tuesdays with Morrie (1997). This is his first novel. With an appropriately fable-like tone, Albom tells the story of Eddie, "an old man with a barrel chest." But for us, Eddie's story "begins at the end, with Eddie dying in the sun"--at Ruby Pier, an amusement park by the sea, where he spent most days, for despite his advanced years, he worked as a maintenance man on the rides. He dies on his eighty-third birthday trying to save a little girl from an accident. Eddie wakes up in heaven, where he is informed that "there are five people you meet in heaven. Each . . . was in your life for a reason. You may not have known the reason at the time, and that is what heaven is for. For understanding your life on earth." And, not surprisingly, this is what the novel is about: Eddie coming to appreciate his 83 years of mortal life; the novel's "point" is that apparently insignificant lives do indeed have their own special kind of significance. Good Book!

I thought it was really good, but I would not read it again. The book is centered around an old man named Eddie who passes away at the beginning of the story. Eddie goes to heaven and there he meets with five different people. These people are all connected to him in different ways, some of them he knows and some of them he has never met before. The author Mitch Albom has given us an interesting perspective on what may happen once we die and this story has made me consider certain aspects in life more deeply. Looking back at the book I don't really share many connections with the people in the story, but I definitely recommend it to those who are interested as I believe this is a good read!

Some books, like this one, do not need a review. They need/ you need - to read it. That's all. What a magnificent way to show us all that we are all connected, whether we are aware of it or not. We impact each other directly even if we only hear about it when we are in Heaven. Knowing about it in real time means that you have evolved beyond the restraints of ordinary humans. Good for you!!! Being simple is rather helpful in listening to all the insights that are likely to flood you while reading. No spoilers: I promise. Just buy a book and read it. Now. This minute.

This book did a nice job of comforting me

I wanted to read a book about death after losing my father. This book did a nice job of comforting me, which is what I was hoping for. It's pretty cliche and doesn't offer a deep meaning into death, but it was a nice read. I would probably recommend this to someone who has experienced a loss in hopes of providing some comfort.
