From Booklist
More and more herbs and spices appear in American kitchens daily, encouraged by television chefs and promoted through new ethnic cuisines entering the mainstream. Jill Norman's Herbs & Spices comes at exactly the right moment to guide readers through the tangle of leaves, seeds, and berries. Norman thoughtfully organizes herbs into major classifications by their predominant bouquets. This approach immediately assists the cook looking for substitutions. Norman's tasting notes, borrowing a vocabulary identical to that used for wine, establish a standard language for characterizing each item's salient aromas and flavors. Full-color, close-up pictures aid in identification. Text outlines culinary uses and purchasing and storing data and gives information on growing one's own herbs. A short recipe section offers examples of how specific herbs and spices are used in cooking. A directory of mail-order sources further assists those who lack local access. Norman has made a vital contribution to reference collections for quick identification of species and for the use of herbs and spices in cooking. Mark Knoblauch

This is a MUST HAVE if you love making your own recipes
By Chris Baker
I am a backyard BBQ fanatic who has started competing at local BBQ competitions. Outside of heat, smoke and meat, the most important part of making good BBQ is in your seasonings. Whether it is making a rub, a baste, or sauce, it is important to balance the flavors and recognize what flavors are needed to take your recipe to the next level. This book has all of the information I need to do exactly that. This book gets a LOT of use and abuse in my house, and I have used it as a reference to help me blend/enhance flavors for SO many recipes. I can not recommend this book highly enough. If you want to know about the flavors, uses and pairings of spices, this book will take care of you. The thing I like most about this book is how for each spice it mentions what other spices are typically used with it. This is very helpful when trying to narrow the search for another flavor to add to your recipes.

Only book you need on herbs and spices
By B. Marold
`herbs & spices, the cook's reference' is the latest of eight different books on either herbs or spices by noted culinary editor and author, Jill Norman, one of the more influential disciples of the great English culinary writer, Elizabeth David, who contributed two books of her own to this subject.

I chose this book to review since I had a backlog of herb and spice books to review, and I wanted to start with one I could assume to be a standard against which all other books can be measured. The problem with starting with the standard is I'm assuming this role purely on the basis of the author's reputation in the field. I am happy to say that I find virtually nothing in this book to invalidate my holding it up as a standard against which other books on the subject may be judged.

For starters, Ms. Norman convinces us at the outset that the difference between an herb and a spice is vague enough around the world to require that we treat the two together, thereby eliminating any chance of leaving something out because it was not thought to be a spice or an herb. Part of this ambiguity is her statement that in the United States, a dried herb is considered a spice. Since Ms. Norman is an expert on the subject, I must assume that there is a faction in America that believes this. She states this to make it clear that her basis for distinguishing herbs from spices is based on the current British thinking on the subject. But, since she is covering both, the issue is academic in this book.

Much more interesting is Ms. Norman's separation of the various herbs and spices into a large number of categories based on flavor. Herbs are divided into `Fresh and mild herbs' featuring parsley, `Sweet Herbs' featuring lavender, `Citrus or tart herbs' featuring lemon balm, `Licorice or anise herbs' featuring dill and fennel, `Minty herbs' featuring mint, `Onion herbs' featuring garlic, `Bitter or astringent herbs' featuring celery, `Pungent and spicy herbs' featuring sage, thyme, and cilantro. This division alone is a great service, as it gives us a sound basis for substituting one herb for the other, as when we may need borage, and see that it's in the same class as parsley.

A deeper look at this lineup of herbs shows that Ms. Norman is covering a far broader range of species and varieties within species than most other books or sections of books on herbs. Most of us know of two or three varieties of basil. Ms. Norman shows us fourteen, divided between three groups, Genoese and purple basil (Ocimum basilicum), `other basils', and Asian basils. The inclusion of the scientific name is essential in a work like this. The most important need is when you wish to buy seeds to grow these plants, the scientific name is the only way you have to guarantee getting the species or variety you want. If you happen to see seeds for `Asian Basil', know that this could be any one of seven different species or varieties! Within sections such as those for the Asian basils, the pictures in this book really shine, as the pictures of these seven varieties are all on the same page, including stems and flowers in many cases, as many of the leaves from two different varieties are almost identical in appearance.

We are especially happy that Ms. Norman has drawn outside the lines in her including several plant species which border on what we think as teas (such as sassafras), salad greens (such as sorrel and celery), or root vegetable (such as horseradish and wasabi). The only lapse I can find in all the material on herbs is that the distinction between the Mediterranean bay is not clearly made from the New World plants often called `bay'.

Spices get an equally thorough treatment, being divided between `Nutty spices' such as sesame, `Sweet spices' such as vanilla, `Acidic and fruity spices' such as tamarind, `Citrus spices' such as lemon grass, `Licorice or anise spices' such as anise, `Warm and earthy spices such as saffron, `Bitter or astringent spices such as capers, `Pungent spices' such as chiles, ginger, mustard, and pepper. One of my fondest discoveries in this book is that not only are ginger and galangal shown to belong to two different biological genus, they are categorized as in two different taste classes. These two are commonly mistakenly lumped together.

The sections on chilis (genus capsicum) are as vividly colorful as all the others, with a surprise in that the heat in a chili species is rated on a scale of 1 to 10 rather than the better known (in the U.S. at least) Scoville scale.

The chapter in this book which makes it the only book you should need on herbs and spices is the one on recipes, featuring combinations for all the world famous herb and spice mixes, and lots you may never have heard of. The very best aspect of this section is that it provides not one recipe for things such as bouquet garni, but seven, for beef, pork, lamb, poultry, game, fish, and vegetables.

The very last chapter on general recipes could have easily been left out, as what comes before is more than enough to justify this as the only book you will need on herb and spice usage. One thing some readers may miss and the one thing that may justify a second book in you library dedicated to herbs and spices is one that deals with the history and geography of herb and spice origins. This book will not satisfy your curiosity over how New World Tomatoes joined up with their soul mates, Mediterranean basil.

An excellent book and a `must have' for a foodie library.

The ultimate spice dictionary and reference
By Fan of His Royal Badness
The book is organized to make using it a dream. It is divided into three sections Herbs, Spices and Recipes.

The first two sections are organized identically; an introduction, categories/groupings of herbs or spices and a section on preparing herbs or spices. Herb groupings are Fresh and mild herbs, Sweet herbs Citrus or tart herbs, Licorice or anise herbs, Minty herbs, Oniony herbs, Bitter or astringent herbs, Pungent and spicy herbs. Spice groupings are Nutty spices, Sweet spices, Acidic and fruity spices, Citrus spices, Licorice or anise spices, Warm and earthy spices, Bitter or astringent spices, pungent spices.

Each individual herb or spice has a page that includes pictures, history, notes on flavor use how it is harvested, culinary uses, other spices/herbs it combines with. The pictures and information combine to make this a top notch reference.

Recipes section is divided into two main sub-sections Blending herbs and spices and Cooking with herbs and spices. There is also a bibliography, sources and an index.

The Recipes for herb blends is shorter than expected but nice and represent other cultures. The spice blends are from around the globe and a longer more comprehensive list there are also recipies for sauces and marinades. Both herb and spice blend Recipes include suggestions and notes on how to use them and the best food pairings.

Cooking with herbs and spices has a good range of Recipes and the author packs a lot into this small section; soups and light dishes, fish, meat (includes three chicken recipes), vegetables, pasta noodles & grains, desserts and drinks ( including ice cream, Pineapple ginger cooler, Mojito).

The bibliography gives a detailed and exhaustive list of sources should you need to do further research. The source section gives contact information on places to purchase herbs and spices it is also a long and detailed contact information many including, addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers and web sites, and e-mail if available.

If you are a beginner and want to learn more about how to use herbs and spices or if you are an experienced cook and want to expand your flavor palate this is a great reference for you.

My favorite fast clinical reference for RPD's
By rtkdmd
This is my favorite fast reference for RPD's. Some theory is explained in the first chapters (above vs. below height of contour clasping, application of a particular major connector, etc), but for the most part it's composed of figures of edentulous situations with their appropriate RPD designs. Some variations are always offered. You're also encouraged to reference previous figures for more in depth explanations of particular design elements.
Of course, in RPD design there's art involved; back in dental school I always had professors changing this or that from the basic suggested design.
However, in all my treatment planning, an RPD design suggestion straight from this book, coupled with good diagnosis from the clinician, will come back from the lab with good retention/resistance/stability. I've been very pleased with this as a clinical reference!

Review
"One of the reasons why we adopted the Mankiw text was because of its relevant concepts that students could really relate to. I would say to continue with this trend, and also be sure to use examples that relate to the current economic conditions that make sense to a beginner economics student."

"I have used Mankiw for several years, across at least 3 or 4 of its editions. I like the writing in the book--it's clear and exposits the ideas effectively. It covers topics that I want to cover, mostly in the order that I like to cover them. It's at the appropriate level for our students--not too difficult but not superficial either. I also like the fact that this book is very closely integrated with the Aplia system, which I believe is an important learning tool."

"Very student friendly text. Makes economics easy to understand. Some of the other texts would take a lot of reading to explain an idea."

it's "all that and a bag of chips"
By Caraculiambro
This is a demanding high school (or undemanding college) introductory textbook on the subject. Only the most rudimentary algebra is required, and honestly one could easily get through the book without even that.

The edition is handsomely printed, with a font that's easy on the eye and plenty of colorful and helpfully-glossed graphs. The chapters themselves are not too long, which helps with a student's morale, believe me.

Recently I was put into a situation where I had to go, in the space of about 4 months, from knowing jack-squat about economics to being able to teach college-level macroeconomics!

Well, I frantically collected a ton of textbooks and articles about macroeconomics, ranging from the elementary to the abstruse and got to work.

And I gotta say: when something befuddled me and I found myself threshing about from text to text for the best explanation, it was nearly always Mankiw who came through with the critical phrasing that made the idea click and got me saying: "Ohhhhhh! I get it!" most often.

Not that this was always the case. There were times when I found better explanations elsewhere (e.g., Chapter 19, on the foreign currency market, is exasperatingly elliptical and could use a major dummying-down), but more often than not, Mr. Mankiw had the goods: the clearest and most easy-to-follow way of wording or graphing a slippery or counter-intuitive concept.

Of course, it's easy to hate Mr. Mankiw: he's young, he's handsome, he's brilliant (one of the youngest full professors ever at Harvard), and he's rich (his textbooks are now standard in AP courses nationwide). Jerk!

Because of these reasons, I would love to trash his book, showing how it "ain't all that."

Well, it is. Gulp.

Only one note: If you're planning on getting this book to study macroeconomics independently, you will find one irritating drawback: there are exercises at the end of each chapter, but no answers in the back. Essentially, therefore, it's a book for schoolchildren, not mature learners.

But its explanations -- believe me -- can't be beat.

Very comprehensive and well written!
By A Customer
I use this book in my economics class and all I can say is that is excellent. The author describes the basic concepts without being too complicated and messy. He keeps the things simple and incorporates some real-life economic problems and discussions into each chapter. The book overall provides a clear insight into microeconomics and shows what it is all about.

Gets the job done, but nothing fancy here.
By Andrew McCaffrey
This book was the textbook used in a class I was enrolled in on microeconomics. Since it was only an introductory course, this book did a good job of covering a lot of the basic fundamentals that one needed to know before proceeding onto more advanced material. If all you are looking for is a rough guide to the subject without anything terribly in-depth, then this text work well for you. The sections that are touched on are covered extremely well and everything is explained with a lot of clarity. On the other hand, it is a rather frustrating read at times, as it breezes over some of the more interesting aspects of economics. It would have been helpful if the author had gone into more detail during certain sections, or at least had directed the reader to other publications where one could learn more.
Note to the buyer: Beware that the first six chapters in this book are identical to the first six chapters in PRINCIPLES OF MACROECONOMICS (note the "A") written by the same author. And I am not exaggerating when I say they are identical -- even the practice problems are the same. If you are looking for some variety in introducing yourself to economics, you may want to use a different set of books. To have this much repetition in books... may not be something you are interested in, so be careful before buying the second if you already own the first.

Archaeology of Ancient Mexico and Central America: An EncyclopediaFrom Routledge

This is the first comprehensive, one-volume encyclopedia in English devoted to pre-Columbian archaeology of the Mesoamerican culture area.
In more than 500 articles by the major experts in the field, this work brings the most recent scholarship to an examination of regional environments and their cultural evolution. Entries range from the familiar and world-renowned archaeological discoveries of Maya and Aztec sites to more recent excavations such as the Sayil archaeological zone in the Yucatan and Teopantecuanitlan in Guerrero. A rich historical and cultural resource on one of the world's six cradles of civilization, this reference is ideal for students, scholars, and prospective travelers.

From Booklist
Reviewed with Medieval Archaeology.

These titles treat two major fields of inquiry within the discipline of archaeology.

Archaeology of Ancient Mexico and Central America covers the archaeology not only of the region known as Mesoamerica (Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama) but also of the cultural areas where pre-Columbian cultural traits were carried by migrants, from the U.S. Southwest to northern Ecuador. These cultural traits include farming techniques, food preparation, clothing, tools, weapons, games, architectural characteristics, writing, calendars, and religious beliefs. The editors present "a very broad introductory overview briefly summarizing what we know about the earliest human populations, the emergence and spread of food production and the rise of complex societies." The majority of the authors are from U.S. universities.

Each entry is signed and ends with a bibliography. Lengthy entries on topics such as Agriculture and domestication , Ball game , Ceram ics, Clothing , and Gender roles (a relatively recent interest that is gaining importance in Mesoamerican archaeology) are written for the layperson and college student and focus more on cultural anthropology than on technical aspects of archaeology. There are survey articles on groups such as the Aztecs and the Maya and entries for individual archaeological sites from the well-known, such as Cichen Itza, in Yucatan, Mexico, to hundreds of the more obscure. The names of the region and country follow each site in parentheses in the entry heading. Archaeological methods (e.g., Dating methods, Skeletal analysis) are discussed, as are a few important people like Manuel Gamio (1883-1960), one of Mexico's most important archaeologists, and the American George Vaillant (1901-1945).

Of special interest in this work are the tables and charts. For example, one table lists diseases before and after the European contact, and another lists museums with collections of pre-Columbian artifacts in the U.S and Central America.

Margaret Bunson's Encyclopedia of Ancient Mesoamerica (Facts On File, 1996) has a helpful guide to pronunciation, a useful chronological table, and five pages of architectural sites. However, it does not attempt the same breadth of coverage as the volume under review. Archaeology of Ancient Mexico and Central America is an essential purchase for collections devoted to the archaeology of Middle America and Mexico from the Pleistocene to European contact in the mid-sixteenth century.

Though it is playing an increasingly important role in contemporary archaeology, the archaeology of the Middle Ages is still a fragmented field. Crabtree, editor of Medi eval Archaeology, states in her preface, "One of the goals of this encyclopedia is to bring together in one volume the research of a diverse range of scholars who work on a wide variety of archaeological problems." Archaeologists trained in history, anthropology, archaeology, and classics contributed to this work, and only 17 percent are from the U.S. Research by Czech, Polish, Slovak, and Hungarian archaeologists, not available in English until now, is included. Medieval archaeology is defined as beginning with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century and ending with the dawn of the Modern Era, A.D. 1500. The focus is on "the Latin west stretching from Poland to Ireland and from southern Italy to northern Scandinavia. The Balkans and the Byzantine world are excluded.

Country and regional surveys for areas of Europe with major sites and research programs make up a large portion of the book. There are 17 country overviews, France receiving the most attention with 13 pages as opposed to 4 each for Germany and England. More than 80 sites are represented, with more than a quarter of them in England. At many of the sites, archaeology became important when urban redevelopment unearthed remarkable medieval archaeological finds. World War II bombing raids also exposed sites of interest to medieval archaeologists.

Other entries in the work treat topics such as Animal husbandry , Boatbuilding, Pilgrim souvenirs, and Water supply. There are entries related to archaeological techniques such as dendrochronology (a dating method) and crafts such as pottery and dyeing. The article Gender is especially interesting because the concept was not introduced until the 1980s in prehistoric archaeology and not until 10 years later in medieval archaeology.

There is no encyclopedia with which to compare this work, which is highly readable for nonspecialists. Very little technical language is used. Bibliographies accompany each entry, and a subject guide by country and an index facilitate access. The work is recommended for large public and academic libraries where study of the social and urban aspects of this historical period may be augmented by knowledge gleaned from these digs. REVWR

Excellent Resouce
By S. Taliaferro
This truly massive tome contains over 500 alphabetized entries that provide basic information about pre-columbian culture in mexico and central america. It also contains analysis of all known archaeology sites in the region. I have yet to look up a site that was not mentioned in this book. This is a must have for any student of archeaology interested in this area. The language can be a bit technical, but not to the extent of ruining the book even for the rank amateur. Due to the scope of this book the information is basic and the analysis is cursory but it is still very useful even to a seasoned archaeologist.

How many times have you been on vacation in central america or mexico and seen a road sign or map entry for ruin and wondered about its origin and significance or about the people who lived there? Wonder no more. I only hold a bachelors in archaeology so I am definitely not an expert but it seems that even if you actually work in the field this book is still invaluable as a quick reference guide with a comprehensive indexed listing of the thousands of sites in the region.

Sadhana, a prayer primer
By Karen O'Malia
"Sadhana" is an excellent book that I have personally owned for years. I continue to use it in my ministry, although you don't have to be a pastor to use it, to teach people how to do centering and contemplative prayer. This prayer has life-changing effects on a person's life. Anthony De Mello really understood how to share information in a way that all people could understand and use.

The origins of a great spiritual writer
By J. P. Reynolds
This is DeMello’s first book and, as such, is his most “traditional” book. This book serves well as a companion to the Spiritual Exercises. I think it is a great guide to have if you are a retreat director. If you're not familiar with DeMello’s later works or if you’re beginning to enter into a practice of meditation, I suggest you start with “Taking Flight” as it’s more accessible.

Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate, by Justin Lee

As a teenager and young man, Justin Lee felt deeply torn. Nicknamed "God Boy" by his peers, he knew that he was called to a life in the evangelical Christian ministry. But Lee harbored a secret: He also knew that he was gay. In this groundbreaking book, Lee recalls the events--his coming out to his parents, his experiences with the "ex-gay" movement, and his in-depth study of the Bible--that led him, eventually, to self-acceptance.

But more than just a memoir, TORN provides insightful, practical guidance for all committed Christians who wonder how to relate to gay friends or family members--or who struggle with their own sexuality. Convinced that "in a culture that sees gays and Christians as enemies, gay Christians are in a unique position to bring peace," Lee demonstrates that people of faith on both sides of the debate can respect, learn from, and love one another.

Review
"Radiates a genuine concern and belief in progress through slow, personal evolution...Both LGBT individuals and Christians will benefit from the modeling of a kinder, more accommodating navigation of this culture war."―Publishers Weekly,

"Lee's writing is approachable, and he shows compassion for those on all sides of this debate."―Kirkus Reviews

"Disarmingly vulnerable...poignant..."―Christianity Today

"The beauty of this book is that Lee wants to challenge all kinds of Christians...Perhaps it is because of so many fights hard won that Lee is now able to move into more nuanced territory in this gracious and grace-filled memoir."―The Christian Century

"Lee, one of our leading voices on the issues of being gay and Christian, gives us this powerful look at ways that members on both sides of the lines can learn from and grow with each other."―SHE Magazine

"...His book offers helpful suggestions for Christians...[and] helpful suggestions for pastoral counseling..."―World Magazine

"This book is full of three things that are not always much in evidence in our debates on sexuality--fresh air, common sense and manifest love of Christ. What makes it different is that it is not essentially about arguing a case but abut bridging the gaps of understanding and sympathy that (inside and outside the Church) have distorted or muffled the overwhelming miracle of Gods gift in Christ and in Scripture. I welcome it very warmly."―Honorable Reverend Dr. Rowan Williams

"Justin didn't leave the church when he realized he was gay...he has been too determined to show them how much he loves them...This is the story of how one Christian man's faith taught him to accept himself, serve others who are in need, and bridge the gap for those who do not always understand."
―Jennifer Knapp, Singer/Songwriter, Founder of InsideOutFaith.org

"This is the most important book I've read in years, and it will be the first I recommend to anyone interested in bridging the divide between the LGBT community and the church. Justin has given us a precious gift with this story. May we receive it with the same courage and faith with which it was delivered."―Rachel Held Evans, blogger, author of Evolving in Monkey Town and A Year of Biblical Womanhood

"In TORN, Justin Lee blends simplicity, clarity, humility, honesty, and vulnerability in a gracious and eye-opening way. The book brings fresh perspectives to old and polarized debates, and it offers a wise and faithful way forward for pastors and other Christian leaders, parents and other family members, not to mention gay men and women themselves. This is the book that every Evangelical, Charismatic, and Roman Catholic Christian should read on the question of homosexuality."
―Brian D. McLaren, author of Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? Christian Identity in a Multi-Faith World (brianmclaren.net)

About the Author
Justin Lee is the founder and executive director of The Gay Christian Network (GCN), a nonprofit, interdenominational organization working to increase dialogue between gays and Christians and support people on both sides wrestling with related issues.

A passionate Christian from a conservative evangelical background, Justin thought he knew everything there was to know about the Christian approach to homosexuality-until unexpected events turned his world upside down and forced him to reconsider everything he believed. Today, his organization works with individuals, families, and churches to stop the debate from tearing people apart.

Justin's work has garnered national attention and praise from gays and Christians from across the theological spectrum. He has been featured in numerous print, radio, and television venues including Dr. Phil, Anderson Cooper 360, the Associated Press, and a front page article in The New York Times. He is the director of the 2009 documentary Through My Eyes about the debate's impact on young Christians, and the co-host of popular long-running podcast GCN Radio. Justin lives in Raleigh, NC.

Gentle, compassionate, and personal.
By Kolwynia
I am deeply grateful to find such a kind and tenderhearted approach to this subject. Justin Lee's book is part autobiography, part Bible study, and part call for grace and empathy to those on both sides of the issue. No matter what your personal views, you will find something valuable in Justin's account of his own journey and desire to reconcile his sexuality with his relationship with God. His writing is unassuming and down to earth in a way that anyone can relate to. One moment he is referencing Holy Scripture, the next South Park or The Princess Bride.

As a straight Christian who never had to go through a struggle like Justin's, it was pretty easy for me to ignore the plight of gay Christians. In fact, there was a time when I didn't think there was such a thing! I wish someone had placed a book like this in my hands a long time ago.

Justin writes with compassion and love. This is not an angry book, but a gently passionate one. If you are expecting to be preached at, you will find yourself pleasantly surprised. Justin is honest about the things he faced that confused or hurt him, the questions he had, and why he came to the conclusions that he did. He also makes it clear that the church is a diverse place where not everyone is going to come to the same conclusions he did. And that's okay.

(If you are familiar with the Gay Christian Network, the organization that Justin is a part of, and their compassionate Side A & Side B approach to the controversy, you will find that same level of empathy on display here. If not, the idea is that some Christians believe that God is fine with homosexual behavior and willing to bless same-sex couples the same way as he would couples of the opposite sex. And some Christians believe that God does not want people to engage in sexual activity with members of the same sex under any circumstances, so gay Christians who want to please God have to live celibate lives. The approach of the GCN is that people who hold either point of view should be treated with the same amount of respect, even if you disagree with them. I am personally fond of this approach because it promotes tolerance and empathy without requiring people to leave their values at the door.)

I appreciate Justin's study of scripture in the chapter Back to the Bible, where he describes his own in-depth study of the scriptures that are normally used to show that God opposes homosexuality. I personally come from a similarly conservative regard for Scripture, so it is wonderful to see someone who isn't going to scrub a passage just because it doesn't say what he wants it to. Justin's study is not someone looking for loopholes in the Bible that he can squeeze his sexuality into. He comes across as someone who opens the Bible with a genuine question in his heart: "What does God want from me?"

For Justin, the journey to answer that question ends in the realization that it is possible to be both gay and Christian, and you do not have to compromise your faith in Jesus or His Word just because you are gay. Some readers may not be convinced by his arguments, but I believe that even they will be glad to read the book and see how and why he came to the conclusion he did.

For some, this is going to be the most important book they ever read, other than the Bible itself. In a society divided by a Culture War, those who try to hold on to their faith and their sexuality are being pulled apart by outside forces as well as internal conflict. They need someone to tell them that they are not alone, and that God is not their enemy. I have yet to find a voice that speaks on the subject with so much understanding and love, yet remains as uncompromising in his faith as Justin Lee.

I highly recommend this book to anyone.

The book I've been waiting for.
By Brian J. Henry
Alright, so it's only been a day, but I devoured this book. I cannot recommend it enough. It's the book I've been waiting for, and thought I might have to write one day, but now it's here. I'm not the most eloquent with words but here's a mini review.

The main topic of this book is really the misunderstandings perpetuated by churches, and their consequences. Despite their good intentions, ignoring the facts on these things leads to more harm than good, and ultimately turning people away from the faith. This book sets the record straight on whether it's a choice, the difference between orientation and behavior, the purpose (and dangers) of ex-gay ministries, and other things that have been seriously and unfortunately ignored.

Justin Lee, the author, is very respectful to both sides (Side A affirming same-sex relations, and Side B affirming celibacy), though he himself is Side A, and lays out his beliefs on the "clobber passages" in a chapter towards the end.

Its mostly focused on what the church is doing wrong as far as reaching out towards gay people, why it's wrong, and how churches and Christians can do better. He makes a serious point in his conclusion that churches who expect LGBT folk to be celibate need to be better at supporting them, instead of only hearing "gay" and starting to preach at them before they understand the situation.

All the while, chronicling what it's like to grow up gay having been raised as a strong Southern Baptist, the pain and the guilt and the struggles, why am I like this, what can I do, etc. Giving a great understanding for what it's like to be gay AND Christian.

It's a vital book for anyone seeking to understand all the sides of this debate better.

The Truth That Set Me Free...
By Amazon Customer
I just finished reading Justin Lee's book called Torn and all I can do is sit back with tears in my eyes and a heart filled with hope at the amazing potential for good that this book could bring to a church divided.

This is a book for those who are just trying to understand how a good Christian boy or girl, growing up in a bible-believing fundamental church, and raised in a Christ-loving and Christ-following home, could possibly have turned out to be gay.

This is a book that brings understanding for the mom and dad who just listened in dumbfounded horror to their son or daughter "come out" to them, fearfully confessing to them that he or she was gay.

This is a book for the truly caring pastor, deacon, or Sunday-school teacher who suspects or discovers that the young man or young woman they watched grow up in their church is fighting with feelings of same-sex attraction or who openly confesses they are gay.

This is a book that will help the person who has a friend or family member who confides in them that they are gay understand how to react in the same way Jesus and Paul would have interacted with them.

...and possibly most importantly, this book is a door of hope for you, the gay Christian who loves God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and yet unwittingly find yourself fighting feelings of attraction for the same sex... feelings you never asked for, feelings you never chose, and feelings you definitely never wanted... this book is for you.

Mom, did your little boy just come to you in tears telling you that he thought he was gay? Read this book! It will help you understand and react in a manner befitting the gift God entrusted you with.
Dad, did your little girl come to you sobbing with fear and shame, confiding in you that she was gay? Get a copy of this book and don't put it down until you turn the last page! It's definitely going to help you.
Do you want to dig deeper into God's Holy Word to study and understand those verses of Scripture the church has historically used to condemn homosexuality? Then please read this book! It can lead you to greater understanding and grace whether you agree with Justin's conclusions or not.

Next to our Holy Father's Word, this book is quite possibly the most important book of our time that everyone who calls themselves Christian should read. I cannot recommend this book enough for the church of the 21st century.
This book has the potential to bring wisdom and enlightenment to every child of God that could result in bridging the gap of fear and condemnation between the church and her gay children... and the gay population in general. It's that powerful!

This is a story about feeling torn between unwanted desires and the desire to live wholeheartedly for God and how reconciliation between one's faith and orientation can occur.

As I read along with Justin and his struggles to live fully for God and crucify his same-sex feelings, I found myself reliving my own fear and anguish of growing up with a terrible secret that I could never tell anyone... yet in tears and trembling with fear I finally did.
This book may help you avoid spending the hundreds of hours and dollars that I spent in an ex-gay ministry, desperately doing everything within my power to choose not to be gay... but to no avail.
I remembered the feelings of despair I felt when my ex-gay counselor finally was honest with me and informed me that I probably would always have feelings for other guys and how dejected I felt hearing his words and knowing I would probably never truly be straight... but at least he respected me enough to be honest which is more than most ex-gay leaders choose to be.
I thought about the hours, days, and years of my life that slipped on by as I spent them praying to my omnipotent God, begging Him to change my feelings of attraction for the same sex... and how He never did.
And I remember the time I sensed the Holy Spirit gently impressing upon me the words that set me free: "Child, you acknowledge I am Almighty and all powerful! Knowing I have the power to change your feelings, don't you think that if I really wanted you changed that I would have done so by now?" (It took weeks, even months for me to clue in to the fact that it really was the Holy Spirit leading me to light and not the devil trying to deceive me, but I finally listened to Him and found my freedom.)

Justin talks about how he found his freedom too as he shares his story with us in this book... and as you read about his journey to a freedom he once couldn't have imagined, maybe you too will find the answers to a freedom you may seek; whether you are a parent or a friend of someone you love who is gay, or as one who finds themselves with feelings of attraction for the same sex.

I wish with all my heart my parents or pastor would have had a book like this to read back when I was struggling to come to terms with being gay while maintaining my devotion to God at the same time. Maybe a lot of pain and anguish could have been spared.

That being said, read this book with hope and remember... you are greatly loved.
