Lover of Unreason: Assia Wevill, Sylvia Plath's Rival and Ted Hughes' Doomed Love, by Yehuda Koren, Eilat Negev

The failure of the marriage between Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes has always been considered from one of two conflicting viewpoints: hers or his. Missing for more than four decades has been a third perspective on the events that brought their marriage to its ill-fated end, the story of another—the other—woman: Hughes’ mistress Assia Wevill.

Like Plath before her, Assia shared her life with Hughes for seven years, until she took her own life and that of their daughter at the age of forty-two, in a manner that nearly replicated Plath’s suicide six years earlier. Drawing on previously unavailable documents and private papers, including Assia’s diaries and her intimate correspondence with Hughes, this book shows the vital influence Assia exerted on the poet and his work, and the uneasy life they shared under the long shadow of Plath.

A Lover of Unreason is the first-ever full-length biography of Assia Wevill. It casts a keen light, and explores the emergence of a singular twentieth-century woman. Three-times divorcée, career woman, mistress, and single mother, Assia Wevill openly defied the conventions of a censorious pre-feminist Britain and mesmerized men and women alike with her quick-mind and exotic beauty.

From Publishers Weekly
The "other woman" in the Sylvia Plath–Ted Hughes divorce receives long-delayed consideration in this assiduously researched, compulsively readable biography, where the authors draw on newly revealed primary sources. The life of thrice-married Assia Wevill (1927–1969) makes a fascinating story even before her six-year affair with Hughes and the birth of his (unacknowledged) daughter, Shura. Born in Berlin of a Russian Jewish father and a German Lutheran mother, raised in Tel Aviv, married to a British soldier in order to gain a British passport, Assia was, as the authors demonstrate, a smoldering femme fatale, albeit highly intelligent, witty and talented. While Koren and Negev (In Our Hearts We Were Giants: The Remarkable Story of the Lilliput Troupe) don't whitewash Assia's volatile, self-absorbed personality or her serial adulteries, they do contradict the widespread impression that Assia was the initial seducer of Hughes. This will be an important book for Hughes scholars, primarily for the authors' exclusive 1996 interview with the poet, in which he identified the poems he wrote alluding to Assia after her death, which he felt no critic had ever interpreted correctly. Newly revealed letters and interviews reinforce previous accounts of Hughes's sexual attraction and the dedicated philandering that drove two women to suicide. Photos. (Jan. 23)

From Booklist
The adventurous biographical duo Koren and Negev follow their unusual Holocaust tale, In Our Hearts We Were Giants (2004), with the first complete biography of one of literature's most shadowed figures. The tragic story of Sylvia Plath's marriage to Ted Hughes and subsequent suicide has been assiduously analyzed after the story of the second catastrophic relationship in Hughes' life of many love affairs finally emerged. He and Plath broke up for many painful reasons, but the catalyst was the dramatically beautiful Assia Weevil. Little has been widely known about this bright, artistic, magnetically attractive, and, finally, devastated woman of Russian Jewish and German Lutheran blood and numerous entanglements, or the nature of her tumultuous seven-year relationship with Hughes and her influence on his work, or Hughes' feelings toward their daughter. Koren and Negev, privy to previously unavailable sources, sensitively synthesize a cache of volatile information to create a fully dimensional and deeply disconcerting portrait of Weevil, who committed suicide in 1969 in the same manner as Plath but took her young daughter with her. Biography of a woman of contradictions
By SusieQ
I am almost completely uninterested in the somewhat tortured lives and art of the poets, Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, and I admit I initially picked up LOVER OF UNREASON for its startlingly beautiful cover photograph of Assia Wevill, with an outsider's curiosity about the whole affair, of which I only knew some passing facts.

This is a biography of a woman who was made up of contradictions. Shallow and selfish, yet very attractive to men and very charming; clever; a talented linguist, and later a translator of note, with artistic talent too--but all without the necessary concentration and application to create a lasting body of work. Assia was beautiful and socially skilled, yet deeply insecure and disliked people taking notice of her lovely face; this, despite a childhood with loving parents who thought the world of her and surrounded her with admiration; too much, perhaps.

The times in which Assia Wevill lived demanded that a woman marry the man she was sleeping with, so Wevill was married three times (quite shocking for her era) and apparently had numerous abortions. The thing that struck me about her story is the fact that she was unable to form lasting relationships with any of her husbands, not really due to any serious fault of theirs, but seemingly because while in a relationship which had the potential to be a good, loving and lasting one, Assia always kept her eyes open, seeking someone or something else. Assia seems to have had no concept of true fidelity, not only of the body, but of the heart. It was disturbing to read about so much wasted time; the choices that caused so much hurt, both to herself and to others, and the waste of her potential.

However much pain Assia caused her husbands during the periods of time she spent with them, she was repaid in kind and in full by her relationship with Ted Hughes. The suicide of Sylvia Plath caused a huge wrent in their already fragile affair, although in one respect it bonded them, since Assia provided care to Ted's children immediately after the loss of Sylvia. But after the initial shock, neither one seemed prepared to let the other go, and years of a toxic and uneven relationship continued; Assia being particularly unwilling or unable to leave the truly unhealthy relationship. After Assia gave birth to their daughter (a choice she made, not supported by Hughes), they formed some stability in their relationship by living as a family in Ireland, but the needs of Hughes' infirm parents and their strong disapproval of his relationship with Assia was another nail in the coffin of their relationship. And their relationship really was, most unfortunately, a coffin. Also, by this time, Assia was getting older. Her ever-increasing insecurities about her looks; about aging, and her earning potential, combined with the maddening indecision over whether to put a period on their relationship that was Ted Hughes' biggest fault, left her convinced there was no other way out but suicide.

I felt a great deal of pity for Assia toward the end, and pity that she chose suicide, yet somehow, after reading the full story of her life, I understood why she did it and why she took her little daughter with her. Yes, that particular choice seems brutal and heartless, and yet, on the other hand, totally understandable, she didn't want to leave her Shura to a father who never really acknowledged her or supported her, or leave her to an aunt who lived a world away, who Shura had never met. (Yet on the other hand, Assia's sister might have been a stablizing influence for the little girl. It's impossible to know.) Shura was perhaps the one person who had all of Assia's love, without conditions, and in a twisted way, she had Shura's welfare in mind when she took her life.

Just a tragic, tragic story and a tragic life. The book is very well written and the claustrophobic downward spiral of Assia's life is explored fully and painfully by the authors. As you read her life story her eventual suicide becomes, at least to me, inevitable, despite Hughes' later assertion that it was avoidable. She had no inward resources, no core of strength and stability. She lacked confidence, having never learned to follow through on opportunities given to her throughout her life. She was a ship without a rudder or a compass, doomed to crash on the rocks. At least, that's how I felt after reading this biography.

It's about time
By Amazon Customer
I find "A lover of unreason: The life and tragic death of Assia Wevill, Ted Hughes' doomed love" completely irresistible and very well researched and written. Those of us lucky enough to be at the Plath Symposium in 2002 at Indiana were teased with some of the information presented in the biography. Shock and awe spread throughout the auditorium when Koren and Negev spoke about the Plath/Hughes trip to Ireland, the deception, and the Hughes/Wevill trip to Spain. That was barely the tip of the iceberg in this very complicated situation.

The success of A Lover of Unreason in my opinion comes from presenting a very full and human picture of Assia; a woman who has been alternately ignored and raked over coals and not given sufficient attention. Here is a woman who was far, far from perfect and revered only for her uncommon and undeniable beauty, presented in a way that reminded me much of how Plath was presented in Bitter Fame. I was not expecting a book of idolatry, but I also was not expecting to find that Wevill did have some redeemable qualities. This is truly an enlightening read and brings an important piece of the Plath/Hughes puzzle closer to completion.

Assia's journals, according to the text, are in private hands. They shed some very crucial information into not just her own mind and life, but also into Plath's and Hughes?. I would not mind being introduced to those private hands! I wonder if there are any plans to publish them or to deposit them with an archive?

A fine addition to the wealth of material available about Plath and Hughes
By beckyjean
Finally, the story of Assia Gutmann Wevill is told, and what a story it is. The life of the "other woman" in the mythic marriage of poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes seems eerily like the life of Plath herself. Even the excerpts from Wevill's journals sound -- in tone, style, and content -- like they could have been ripped from Plath's own journals.

I have studied Plath's life and work for a long time, so I am always interested in any new material that is brought to light. The authors have done a fine job with this book. I have read their previous book, "In Our Hearts We Were Giants," which was well-researched and interesting, but I believe their book about Assia Wevill is more well-written; I could barely put it down.

And I have to admit -- after reading Diane Middlebrook's excellent biography of Ted Hughes, "Her Husband," I gained quite a bit of understanding and sympathy for Mr. Hughes. The biography of Assia Wevill, however, negated all of that. I will be interested to reread "Her Husband," and see if I regain any of that feeling.

And now they are all gone, all of these unbelievably intense, brilliant people, so heavily laden with self, self, self. It's likely we'll never know the truth about how everything went down. And down and down, until everybody was dead.

The saddest thing of all is the murder of Shura Wevill, four years old and innocent of everything.

Given the recent advances in maxillofacial prosthetics and reconstructive surgery, the pace of change in the rehabilitation of oral and facial defects has been far too slow. For example, free tissue transfers have been used throughout the world for the last 20 years to restore bony defects of the mandible, but far too many surgeons fail to understand that it is equally important to restore the bulk and contour of the tongue if the oral functions of speech, mastication, and control of saliva are to be restored. This updated edition with an emphasis on a truly multidisciplinary approach provides the reader with insights into the latest developments in maxillofacial prosthetics, reconstructive surgery, and dental care. New chapters present information on digital technology and tissue engineering, and all chapters have undergone significant revision, reflecting the advances in the use of osseointegrated implants and free vascularized flaps. The reader will take away practical knowledge of state-of-the art treatment approaches to ensure that patients of the future will no longer assert that the cure was worse than the disease. Contents

Review
This is a very good comprehensive text to have as a reference and has many excellent contributions from many well-known authors. The text can serve any dentist who might see a patient who has had or will have treatment with chemotherapy and radiation therapy and/or has a maxillary or mandibular defect that requires restoration and maintenance. --Robert Schneider, DDS, MS, FACP, - Special Care in Dentistry, May/June 2012

This is a beautifully constructed textbook from start to finish which presents a range of techniques in an accessible and informative manner. A valuable source of referral for anyone involved in maxillofacial rehabilitation, it certainly helps somewhat to diffuse the infamous phrase "the cure was worse than the disease". --D. Brierley, - British Dental Journal, April 2012

This is one of the rare textbooks that I think should be used in the part of the formal educational curriculum (predoctoral, postdoctoral, and continuing) on the dental and surgical management of maxillofacial defects, particularly the section on the irradiated oncology patient. The book is of sufficient importance that readers should be willing to purchase a personal copy, and it should certainly be present in all dental and medical libraries. --Michael D. Turner, DDS, MD, FACS, - Journal of Dental Education, June 2012

Very well written and timely
By Mary T. Dooley
This book has enough detail for a "beginner" in maxillofacial to be able to perform the prosthodontics procedures. Have not read the whole book yet, but a search of the internet revealed that a current text on this subject was sorely needed. I have met the author many years in a course and am pleased that he took the time to write this.

Review
I applaud Julia and the ALICE Training Institute for providing education to our young students about potential school intruders through "I'm Not Scared...I'm Prepared!" While it is a scary subject, it s also a genuine threat, and students as well as staff deserve preparation. "I'm Not Scared...I'm Prepared!" helps students envision their reaction to an intruder prior to an incident. Because students are accustomed to the step-by-step ways schools normally function, it's important to show them that there is no singular response to these dynamic events. --Joey Melvin - Former School Resource Officer and Deputy Director of The Comprehensive School Safety Plan, Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security/Delaware Capitol Police.

Administrators/Educators, "I'm Not Scared…I'm Prepared!" is a brilliant, proactive way of educating children how to handle lockdown and evacuation situations. Julia has certainly created a dynamic tool for educators to talk to children in "kid terms" about what to do if there is an intruder in the building. The Sheep, The Shepherd and The Wolf Drill will empower communities nationwide to improve school safety. --Erin E. Bowden M.S. Professional School Counselor

Great book for teachers!
By Child Psychologist & Mother Of Two Reviewer
Great book for school teachers! It teaches a specific plan of action if a dangerous person "wolf" gets into the school and shows how a class of students practices this in a school drill, like a fire drill. It prepares the children for lock down procedures such as locking the door, staying out of sight, spreading out, grabbing something to throw at the wolf while we run in a zigzag and make strange noises if he should come into the classroom. It might also be good for parents because these are ideas do seem to be useful. I wish there were more books like this out there specifically for parents to go over with their children at home.

Excellent book for kids!
By Joe Hendry
While teaching children crisis response goes back 50 years for fire training, it is new in the field of active shooter and terrorism. Julia's book is a how to train manual for our times. After teaching ALICE for the past several years, the book provided a refreshing take for me and can only improve survival and coping skills in young children. My own seven year old read the book and thought it was great! Teaching things that are potentially scary in a very non-scary way for children has been a hallmark of ALICE training from the start. Julia captures the training in a perfect way for children and makes it easy to understand. This book should be required reading in every K-2 classroom in America...and not only for the kids!

Cairo: Histories of a City, by Nezar AlSayyad

From its earliest days as a royal settlement fronting the pyramids of Giza to its current manifestation as the largest metropolis in Africa, Cairo has forever captured the urban pulse of the Middle East. In Cairo: Histories of a City, Nezar AlSayyad narrates the many Cairos that have existed throughout time, offering a panoramic view of the city’s history unmatched in temporal and geographic scope, through an in-depth examination of its architecture and urban form.

In twelve vignettes, accompanied by drawings, photographs, and maps, AlSayyad details the shifts in Cairo’s built environment through stories of important figures who marked the cityscape with their personal ambitions and their political ideologies. The city is visually reconstructed and brought to life not only as a physical fabric but also as a social and political order―a city built within, upon, and over, resulting in a present-day richly layered urban environment. Each chapter attempts to capture a defining moment in the life trajectory of a city loved for all of its evocations and contradictions. Throughout, AlSayyad illuminates not only the spaces that make up Cairo but also the figures that shaped them, including its chroniclers, from Herodotus to Mahfouz, who recorded the deeds of great and ordinary Cairenes alike. He pays particular attention to how the imperatives of Egypt's various rulers and regimes―from the pharaohs to Sadat and beyond―have inscribed themselves in the city that residents navigate today.

Review
In the voluminous literature on Cairo, when one would have though everything had already been said (and oft repeated), here comes a new, quirky, original book that takes flight over the full, if fragmented, range of the region's histories. I can think of no other biography of the city that touches on the entire time range between pharaonic and modern times and straddles both sides of the changing course of the Nile and the desert outreaches. AlSayyad is sensitive to themes of Egyptian cultural continuity and the country's ongoing contradictions between openness and tolerance, on the one hand, and fierce religious sectarian and ideological shifts on the other. (Janet Abu-Lughod, Department of Sociology, New School University)

Nezar AlSayyad's invigorating and innovative new account of Cairo adroitly interweaves stories of the city's people and places with those of the city's storytellers. Cairo encompasses the entire life of the great metropolis, and AlSayyad meticulously sets right myths and misconceptions about the City Victorious and its monuments. This will be the standard account for years to come." (Dell Upton, Department of Art History, University of California, Los Angeles)

This is a book as grand as the city it describes. In telling the story of Cairo, Nezar AlSayyad places in the foreground its great architectural monuments and the historical figures who shaped its growth. These are drawn against a rich background portraying the broader political history of Egypt. Cairo: Histories of a City captures both the built detail and the historical landscape of a remarkable metropolis. (Timothy Mitchell, Department of Middle East and Asia Languages and Cultures, Columbia University)

Nezar AlSayyad establishes new intellectual horizons which allow him to narrate urban history with its complex social and political dimensions through the architecture of the city. In this tour de force, AlSayyad opens our eyes and minds to Cairo's place and time in the larger history of humanity. (Gamal al-Ghitany,author of Zayni Barakat, and Khitat al-Ghitani)

[An] exceptionally absorbing and astute, cultural and architectural history of one of the world's most captivating cities...AlSayyad structures his book smartly by place rather than strictly by period: each of the 12 chapters brings the reader to a new section of Cairo in an inviting, informed journey through its development. He introduces readers to the history and architecture of, among others, Coptic Cairo; the noted mosques of al-Azhar and a-Anwar; the Gezira Palace; and medieval Cairo. The final chapters, on the eras of Nasser and Mubarak, are especially gripping; AlSayyad warns that the city has been given to a "new elite" and the preservation of old Cairo for tourists is turning it into a Disney-like theme park. An important second thread of the book sees Cairo as inspiration for artists such as Jean-Léon Gérôme and writers Naguib Mahfouz and Alaa Al Aswany. The author's writing is elegantly clear and evocative, drawing the reader into the "messy and difficult" but "vibrant and innovative" city, leaving one wanting to know what he has to say about the politically transformed city's future. (Publishers Weekly 2011-03-21)

A timely and often surprising series of vignettes serving to trace the physical and cultural evolution of the city from the pharaonic period to the present. Each of the dozen vignettes covers a specific historical period, and AlSayyad includes many fascinating details about historical figures and their impact on the city as it grew from a tiny settlement to a great metropolis. Much of the narrative is driven by the observations and activities of contemporary residents or visitors to the city. Ibn-Khaldun, the renowned Arab traveler and historian, is utilized to provide views of medieval Cairo in the 14th century under the rule of Mamluks. This is an enjoyable tribute to a great, vital city that remains, sadly, unfamiliar to most Westerners. (Jay Freeman Booklist 2011-04-15)

AlSayyad presents a deeply knowledgeable yet highly personal account of the city's history in its various reincarnations--from Memphis, the first capital of united upper and lower Egypt, founded by the Pharaoh Menes around 3100 B.C., to the present...The book is profusely illustrated with maps and photographs, most of them taken by AlSayyad himself. They add enormously to the value of the text, bringing the descriptions of buildings and streets alive with color. Just as the text narrates the history of Cairo from a personal point of view, the photos indicate the standpoint of the photographer as much as they illustrate the text. Some are standard shots of buildings familiar to anyone who has visited and walked around Cairo. The best include the people of the city and their relationship to its historic monuments...[This is] a book of magisterial scope. Those who plan to visit Cairo should read this book first. Those who have visited often or lived there for years will find new appreciations for aspects of the city they know, as well as features they never previously encountered. (Joel Beinin San Francisco Chronicle 2011-07-24)

AlSayyad's book, a colorful sweep of over 3,000 years of urban and architectural history, is as much a short genealogy of Cairo's many commentators and portraitists as it is of its buildings. He narrates a broad history of urban development from the Pharaonic capital of Memphis, "the first Cairo," on the Nile's west bank, to the Ptolemaic, Roman-Byzantine and Arab-Islamic cities that developed on top of and adjacent to each other on the river's east bank. Each chapter begins at an iconic Cairo landmark and tells a history of the building's era, bringing in both neighboring architecture and contemporary voices. (Frederick Deknatel The National 2011-09-16)

This ambitious, timely volume attempts the colossal feat of tracing the history of Cairo, from its ancient to modern incarnations, through a case-study approach to its urban landscape...This work provides a lucid overview of Cairo's architectural and political history, and some food for thought. (E. A. Waraksa Choice 2011-10-01)

Cairo Victorious, Cairo the Oppressor
By Susan Southworth
Does anyone know the evolution of Egypt's eternal city better than Nezar AlSayyad? He has written books about Cairo before, "The Streets of Islamic Cairo" in the first flush of infatuation in 1981 and "Cities and Caliphs" in 1991 as his blind love ended. Now, we get AlSayyad's fond but clear-eyed expertise on his city when it is most needed to understand the revolution in process. The histories quickly move through Memphis, ancient Egypt and the Coptic Enclave to expand on the city of the Fatimids, Mamluks, Ottomans.

The final third of the book is devoted to the period from the 19th century to the dawn of the 21st century. The author skeptically or regretfully portrays the museumification of historic quarters that replace "craft-workers and small shops" with cafes and tourist-oriented facilities. Illegally constructed neighborhoods for migrants and poor residents became autonomous through government neglect, and were forced to develop their own social institutions and networks. "In the late 1980's and early 1990's, Islamist organizations began to establish roots there and the government's laissez-faire approach changed to one of hostility and repression, culminating in confrontations between residents and the state." At the opposite end of the economic scale, lavish shopping malls and gated luxury neighborhoods of leisure, consumption and residences such as Dreamland were developed.

The book is extensively illustrated with the author's clear maps and beautiful color photographs, augmented with historic illustrations including Jean-Leon Gerome's gorgeous painting "La Priere au Caire." The narrative is highly readable, making it the ideal resource for scholars and Arab Spring commentators but also for armchair travelers and readers discovering the fascination of Egyptian novelists.

Navigating the maze
By Larry N. Stout
AlSayyad facilitates understanding of Cairo's long history by focusing discussion of historical epochs on corresponding districts, edifices, and architecture. Treatment of the eventful medieval and early modern periods is especially rewarding. The whirlwind evolution of Cairo since I spent a year there during '83-'84 (when there were merely some 10 million inhabitants) has produced a place that, I'm sure, I would scarcely recognize. Sic transit. And quid nunc....

There is an old story about people describing an elephant, one by touching a leg, one by sitting on the elephant, one by feeling it blow through its large trunk, and so on. Each person has a different understanding of the elephant. Their collected descriptions describe the strength, gentleness, and force of the elephant from different perspectives. To fully understand the elephant, it is necessary to collect many perspectives and to present them as parts of a profile.

Now, consider the English word occupation. No doubt many images come to mind. In contemplating this book, our goal was to provide a variety of ways for people to consider how humans occupy their time, dedicate their energy, realize their sense of personhood, and organize their societies. Occupations can be considered in economic terms, in social terms, as expressions of personality, or as "doings" that influence health and well-being.

Historically, the literature of human occupation has focused on particular perspectives. There have been books on time use, books on leisure and work, books on occupational hazards and safety, and books on occupational medicine and occupational therapy, among others. But no book has previously invited authors from a range of disciplines and backgrounds to explore what people do, and why, how, where, with whom, and to what consequences these everyday occupations collectively define, organize, and influence our lives. This book takes the view that occupations include all meaningful acts that collectively define and give meaning to daily living.

In his book Acts of Meaning, Jerome Bruner has written that people understand their lives through stories. He then points out that these stories are constructed from the acts that are central to everyday human occupations. In this book, the acts that comprise and give meaning to lives are explored in all their complexity, providing awareness that this is a topic that is large and complex like an elephant. We are delighted that the many talented contributors were willing to share their different points of view in this volume. Our hope is that, collectively, their views of occupation will help readers from many diverse areas gain a broader and enriched perspective of occupations, both as a means of social classification and as a powerful array of experiences shaping everyday life in both obvious and subtle ways.

We present you with a book that examines what people do in their everyday worlds. We invite you to consider the various forces that shape the world of occupations and to reflect on how those experiences shape individuals and communities in the world. As you consider the writings in this book, we invite you to explore individual ideas in more detail through focused readings found through examination of the supporting literature for each chapter and to visit the companion web site for additional opportunities to explore topics. We then challenge you to consider your own occupations and to reflect on how they can be used to shape the meaning of your life story and how occupations might be organized in your culture or community.

This is the first editorial collaboration between two people who share a passion for learning about occupations in everyday life. Through this book, we invite you to join us in an engaging and enlightening occupational pursuit. We are indebted to John Robinson, a pioneer in the study of time use related to human occupation, for his contribution to this volume. We acknowledge with appreciation the work of Linda Buxell, Mark Cohen, Charles Hayden, Melissa Kerrian, and Judy Wolf, who made the occupation of editing this book an enjoyable and memorable chapter in our own life stories.

This book is boring.
By L.P.
Enjoy spending hours of your life pondering the definition of a single word? You will love this book. Otherwise it is boring, and delves far too deeply into the meaning of the word "occupation." Let's just choose a definition and move on with our lives. With every sentence you can feel the authors trying to justify their careers.

Confusing
By R. Toomey
As I started to read this book the introduction seemed to be a conclusion summing up all the chapters to come. Entering into the first chapter left me frustrated because it also cited from the other chapters. I feel that I should be reading this book backwards, perhaps then I wouldn't be so confused. Perhaps if you can get through the first part of this book it gets better, good luck.

Andrei Tarkovsky: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers Series)From University Press of Mississippi

Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986) was one of Russia's most influential and renowned filmmakers, despite an output of only seven feature films in twenty years. Revered by such filmmaking giants as Ingmar Bergman and Akira Kurosawa, Tarkovsky is famous for his use of long takes, languid pacing, dreamlike metaphorical imagery, and meditations on spirituality and the human soul. His Andrei Roublev, Solaris, and The Mirror are considered landmarks of postwar Russian cinema.

Andrei Tarkovsky: Interviews is the first English-language collection of interviews with and profiles of the filmmaker. It includes conversations originally published in French, Italian, Russian, and British periodicals. With pieces from 1962 through 1986, the collection spans the breadth of Tarkovsky's career.

In the volume, Tarkovsky candidly and articulately discusses the difficulties of making films under the censors of the Soviet Union. He explores his aesthetic ideology, filmmakers he admires, and his eventual self-exile from Russia. He talks about recurring images in his movies--water, horses, fire, snow--but adamantly refuses to divulge what they mean, as he feels that would impose his own meaning onto the audience. At times cagey and resistant to interviewers, Tarkovsky nevertheless reveals his vision and his rigorous devotion to his art.
