About the Author
Kerryn Offord stumbled on to the 1632 universe in the beginning of 2003 when his father asked him to look up when 1633 would be released in paperback. He discovered Baen's Bar, and has been active in the 1632 conferences ever since. He has had over fifty stories published in the Grantville Gazette, and has plans for many more. Although Dr. Gribbleflotz is Rick Boatright's creation, Kerryn lays claim to creating Dr. Phil.

Rick Boatright is exactly the same age as Bill Gates and like Bill has been a software developer since the early 1970s, but in Rick's case a developer for not-for-profit social service agencies. He's been a moderator of online forums as long as online forums have existed. Since 2001 he's been a writer and editor, as well as the Head Geek, for Eric Flint's 1632 alternate history world. He also held the Head Geek title for Jim Baen's Universe magazine. He is the perpetrator of the annual "Weird Tech" lectures associated with the 1632 minicon and was the creator of Ring of Fire series character, Dr. Gribbleflotz, the world's greatest alchemist.

There is a lot more to Dr. Gribbleflotz than we ever knew. An entertaining addition to the series. Recommended.

Fans of the 1632 universe, a huge collection of millions of words, will know about Dr. G. Non fans will not relish this one, it depends too much on the reader's familiarity with the subject. Lucky for the authors, there are lots and lots of us that eat up each offering in the 1632 world created by Eric Flint and expanded by him and his fellow authors. The books written by Flint himself rank above most of the other contributors. But I liked this one just fine.
Until now Dr. G held a minor spot in the Grantville world, and might be thought of as a sort of blow hard, a lucky clown who fell into a great success. We now know a lot more about the good doctor. We learn enough about his early life, his married life and his career arc to appreciate in more depth just who he is. And who he is makes for good reading.
He has the ability to focus on a project, to think deeply about it and to very meticulously carry out detailed experiments. He has no particular care for money, but has some uptimer partners that see to that aspect of things for him, often to his irritation. At bottom, he has the kind of deep and open decency that attracts people to him and makes his workers determinedly loyal. And his product by and large are of genuine benefit to the people who use them. But what makes him fun is his adherence to a system of understanding the world of science that has its principals nestled deep in the middle ages. He makes sense of science in such an absurd, old fashioned way that we often just smile and wag our head as we read. He is an original.
When he finds yet another way to make a new or improved product-which further enriches him-we are glad for him. We like this guy.
This is a nice big 500 page book too, so we get to spend a lot of time with Dr. G. And not just with him. The book is arranged in episodes, a long series of slightly connected sketches. We learn about the people around Dr. G as well as himself. The scholarship by the authors is just as impressive as the imaginative stories. Clearly, Boatright and Offord have done the brain sweat that makes the inventions of Dr. G plausible.

Much new material

Dr. Gribbleflotz is my favorite character first introduced in the Grantville Gazette. I expected this to be primarily the stories from the Gazette, but there is much new material both on the Dr.'s early years and his time in Prague. Highly recommended for Ring of Fire fans.

A solid entry in the series, good to very good, but not great

While a fan of the 1632 universe this is my first encounter with Dr. Phil. I gather that the first part of the book, his back story, is all new material. I enjoyed that part immensely. The book weaves together existing material while adding much that is new according to other reviews, and I can see that. When we move from the back story to what I can assume is preexisting material, Dr. Phil evolves quickly and unexpectedly. While plausible, the transition could have been handled better, but otherwise the interweaving is pretty good. Part of what will determine if you like the book is whether you find interest in the how the technology is filled out and advanced. This is clearly an appeal of the 1632 universe, but not everyone's interest. I would note as a non-chemist (accountant) in a chemistry company the details of running a chemistry shop and commercializing products felt pretty real.

About the Author
Jovanka Houska is the 2013 Commonwealth Ladies Champion and a many-time winner of the British Women's Championship. She has represented the English team, on top board, at numerous Chess Olympiads, and qualified for the 2006 Women's World Championship. In 2006 she won the English Chess Federation Player of the Year award, the first time a female chess player had received this prestigious recognition.

Excellent Caro addition!

The Caro has been my primary weapon against 1.e4 for almost a decade and it has served me well, so well in fact I'd rather play black and face 1. e4 than play white or play against anything else.

Jovanka Houska put out a great Caro-Kann book for Everyman in 2007, and this book is largely an update of her previous work. That being said, what an enormous and excellent update it is. The first book was a slim volume of 208 pages, and this repertoire edition is 480 pages. Houska's one of the best opening writers in Everyman's stable because she doesn't just overwhelm you with variations (though there are plenty of those), rather she takes you through typical pawn structures, tabiyas, dangerous pawn pushes from the opponents, thematic counter attacks of your own etc.

In her last book she introduced the Caro audience to an alternative way to play against the advance, after 3. e5, then c5! To be fair both Peter Wells and Joe Gallagher gave this variation a cursory examination in their books, but in this new edition, Houska has devoted three chapters to it. It's a good line, played often by British GM Keith Arkell and somewhat unorthodox as most people are used to facing 3. … Bf5.

In this edition she has completely changed her original assessments on how to play against the Panov, and how to play against the 11.Bd2 Classical variation. In the Panov four knights, she's going for an early g6, and she now says that the 11. Bd2 Classical is more dangerous for the black player than once thought.

I'm not going to go through every new update, but one thing I like a lot about this book that's better than the last is the hundreds of hints, memory devices, and formulas peppered throughout the book. I don't have a great memory myself, and these signposts greatly increase the chance that I'll know what to do even if I can't remember an exact move.

This is a full repertoire against 1. e4. Yes you may come across a few things from club players not in here. 1. e4 c6 2. Bc4 comes to mind, but of those tries, most are insipid and you should be able to work out proper replies yourself.

A word of warning though; this edition is not the breezy guide she issued in 2007 and I think it's probably best for 1600+. Also Everyman has done something with this edition I've never seen them do before, they've added elongated folded back and front covers that you can use as book marks. Nice.

An excellent book, building on her earlier Play the Caro-Kann. I coach now in a set of schools where the Caro-Kann is a staple. A number of my beginning and intermediate students actually read this book - an accomplishment with younger players who are averse to reading. I have used the earlier version for years and recommend the update.
