On April 19, 2005, CARDINAL JOSEPH RATZINGER was elected POPE BENEDICT XVI and became the 264th successor to Peter as the "Vicar of Jesus Christ." He may well be the most accomplished theologian to be elected Pope in modern times. Beginning in 1981 he spent over 20 years as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a role often depicted as the "defender of the faith." Cardinal Ratzinger was also President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and of the Preparatory Commission that codified the new "Catechism of the Catholic Church," published in 1994.

A significant look into the thoughts of Benedict XVI

As someone who has read a number of works by Joseph Ratzinger, I must admit that this one is uniquely significant. Media sound bytes and commentaries from those who are displeased with Pope Benedict XVI often unfairly characterize him as someone who is opposed to the Second Vatican Council. Such critics seem to imply that Pope Benedict would like to remold the Church into it's Pre-Conciliar form. In this book, however, we see a valuable glimpse into the thought of Fr. Joseph Ratzinger, as a theological expert who attended and contributed to the Second Vatican Council. We see his frank analysis of the problems facing the Church prior to Vatican II and the excitement of the bishops of the world who assumed their role as pastors to improve the life of the Church. Ratzinger broadly chronicles and comments on the events of each session of the Ecumenical Council, offering his own insight into the significance of each development. Someone who has accepted the charicatures of Ratzinger that are so common would be surprised at his own unambiguous support of the Council reforms.

It would be a mistake, however, to conclude that Ratzinger's theological opinions have changed dramatically since these early reflections. Already in the text of these theological highlights, we see his caution about potential misunderstandings regarding Council buzzwords like "Pastoral," "Ecumenical," etc. In this earlier work, these prophetic cautions are overshadowed by his excitement at the renewal awaiting the Church at the time of the Council; in his later works, like Ratzinger Report, we see the same theologian's reflection on the fact that some of the potential misunderstandings of the work of the Council had in fact become the dominant understanding in many circles. While there is perfect continuity in his thought, the situation of the Church had changed dramatically.

In summary, this is a very significant work for anyone who wants an authentic glimpse into the thought of Pope Benedict XVI.

Very worthwhile

The historical perspective is very enlightening, in particular as regards the situation prior to Vatican II, which warranted Pope John XXIII's call to the bishops, and Pope Paul VI's continuation of that mission. The enormous scope of the project is revelatory. So often, in perplexity about developments since Vatican II, the times before the council can seem either halcyonic or anachronistic, perhaps especially for those who hadn't yet been born.

Ratzinger, writing as a young, already brilliant scholar, lays the cards, the reasons, on the table clearly and fairly, as one who was there. His writing even then was extraordinary. The perspective this brings to later, sometimes troubling developments in our Church is valuable. If you have current concern for, and hope in, the Catholic Church in our day, this text is worth the price and your time.

I think I'm done...

I have read all 3 in this series and unfortunately I think I'm done at this point. While I like the story and the characters I don't like how short each series is. This is one booked chopped up abruptly to make a series. Each time the series ends it really is just the end of a chapter and the next book picks ups right where the other left off so it's obvious this is one book cut up into a series.
I really like the characters(Penny & Matt). I like that Matt is determined and seeks to have Penny's affections. I don't like that Penny is so hard on herself and feels undeserving of his affection. Totally couldn't stand how she wanted to freak out when they were running late to board the flight(oh my is the attendant going to yell at us...really now).
Good short read but rather than waiting a couple months for the next few chapters to be called the next book in this series I think I'm gonna call it quits on Penny & Matt's story. I don't mind paying to read books that I like. I would love a bundle of all of a complete story.
I like Dominick's writing style but I'll never know how Penny & Matt turn out, how the flight ends(cause that's when the story ended), if they make it to Paris, or what's next.

The roller coaster keep going

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The story of Penelope and Matt continues in this third book where we find our characters engaged in the preparation of their trip to the city of love...Paris!
Matt is always fascinating even if a little misterious,always caring,attentive,full of gifts and romantic surprises.
Penelope is struggling a little to believe and to fit in this love story,'cause she feels out of place in Matt's world,'cause she is afraid to let herself go,to make herself vulnerable,she is afraid of not being enough for Matt and that in any moment he could become tired of her and abandon her,but she decide in the end to trust him and try to live her fable!
Unfortunately this book end with a tragic,heart-stopping cliffhanger and I can't wait to read what will happen next to this beautiful couple!

Finally read and finished FOREVER WITH HIM and loved itPenny was a person who wanted to do er job until the night of a snowstorm and she is stranded with Matt. She works in a library and they both share the love of books. She doesn't know who he is and that he is a billionaire until they are rescued. They wanted to be together and they fell love Penelope life is quite and Mat's is with crowds of paparazzi, expensive places. She has wanted ot go to Paris and Matt takes her but while their somethings with his company any he is stuck in front of hi computer day and night leaving Penny on her own and things happen.

Textbook for Math Olympiad or HS Math Contests

Very rarely do you find a single textbook that covers most of the materials for math olympiad or contests aspired students. Also, it's hard to find one high school math text that provides a comprehensive (meaning from basic to advanced) topics to students. 10 years ago I struggled to find one in vain, ended up with reading different treatise like books by Loney, Palmer, Knight-Hall etc to get a solid background in secondary/precalculus math. Now this book does it all. The only drawbacks are that: 1. many typos; 2. typesetting is pretty ugly; 3. no solutions to exercises--which can render the reader infinite amount of time to work out all the problems.

Hopeless book

Thank God it is out of print. Reading this book, it felt as if the authors wanted to show their superiority in math and that they are least interested in helping the students. When I was a kid, there was no training available for math Olympiad in India. I used to bike miles together to a math professor's home which was at a remote place outside my town. I carried this book with me to try and understand the ways of solving tough problems. It was hopelessly written. Just basic theorems were given with no information about any heuristics. The text part consisted of theorems and some worked out problems and the exercises were all mightly hard (all taken from IMOs for the most part). How was I supposed to understand the ways of solving such problems?

Please look at the book written by Arthur Engel titled "Problem Solving Strategies". Right now, the book is even freely available on some website and you can google it to find the link. This book exemplifies the way to write a training book for math Olympiad. Math Olympiad problems are tough ONLY if you are not familiar with the heuristics. If you know the heuristics well, it is very much possible for any person with average intelligence to solve those problems.

I know the culture at IISC math department very well as I have friends and relatives belonging to that circle. These authors are/were from that school. Right now, younger math professors are coming in and I hope they will do a better job. But the older ones have only one thing on their mind. That one thing is to show superiority to others about their knowledge. Please avoid this book completely as it is useless. It will only make you feel more inferior and won't help in any way to crack Olympiad. I suggest Arthur Engel's book as a start. If you have time, you can look at other books also like "The Art and Craft of Problem Solving" by the fantastic author Prof. Paul Zeitz and "Mathematical Olympiad Challenges" by another great Prof. Titu Andreescu. Avoid this nonsense of a book completely.

Addition: These authors are the leaders of the IMO for India. If you look at India's position in the Olympiads, you will find that it is nowhere near the top bracket. That says a lot about the leaders who lead the Indian teams. This book supports that as you can see why these people are ineffective in being able to train Indian kids to obtain more gold medals.

About the Author
Kristine Forney has been a member of the Music History/Musicology faculty at California State University, Long Beach, since 1978. She specializes in Renaissance music, is a performer and teacher of historical instruments, and is the author of numerous scholarly articles exploring diverse facets of Renaissance musical life and practices. She has taught music appreciation to thousands of undergraduate students, and has been an author of The Enjoyment of Music since 1988.

Andrew Dell'Antonio is Distinguished Teaching Professor of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. Winner of the University of Texas Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award, he teaches courses in musical historiography, feminist/queer theory, and cultural studies. Dell'Antonio is a specialist in musical repertories of early modern Europe, and his recent work investigates topics as diverse as postmodern modes of hearing and changing listening practices in the early Italian Baroque.

The late Joseph Machlis was professor of music at Queens College of the City University of New York. Among his many publications are Introduction to Contemporary Music (Norton) and singing translations for many operas.

Beware if you rent or order used. It can wind up costing more than new.

I was required to have this book for my music appreciation class. I have not been impressed with the customer support for this book. The StudySpace for this edition on the Norton website says it is to launch in May but as of 5/30/2015 it has not. There is no option to only purchase studyspace so you are forced to pay $50 for all access which at least includes an e-book for that price. I would strongly recommend not buying this book used or renting unless you will not need to puchase StudySpace for your class but if you like e-textbooks, purchasing all access on the website might save you some money.

Avoid the shorter version and go for the hardback!

I bought the "shorter edition" for a class because I was trying to save money with a paperback. This is NOT the same book at the hardcover! I regretted my purchase by the end of the first class -- the paperback shorter edition is missing so much interesting material from the full-length edition, that you just don't get a good picture of the material being covered. It is like reading only crib notes -- the "flesh" that would give meaning to the whole is missing. So I am selling it back to Amazon (thereby losing a bunch of money because I bought it new) and buying a used hardcover. I'll use my secret code to access the online files for the shorter edition, and for other selections, well, there's Spotify.

Rather than coming with CDs, this book comes with a website and a code to log on to hear the selections. Of course, if you buy a used book, you don't get this, although you can buy it separately.

Outside of the shorter edition being a waste of money (for me), I think the book is wonderfully well organized with great illustrations. I'm looking forward to the hardback version.

This book is great! There are some reviews on here that refer to this book being unsuitable for beginners. I left a comment on one of them, but I think this is an important point that is worthy of mentioning in a review. I wouldn't recommend any book (or DVD) for beginners!! Go to some classes first, with a good teacher. Then buy this book for reference and home practice, and keep going to the classes when possible. That's how I first came to buy this book 15 years ago - and now I need to buy another copy. You can't just look at pictures and descriptions in a book and then try to imitate them. After years of intermittent yoga practice, I am still making mistakes and need to be corrected, because often we think we're doing something that we're not. In other words, learning yoga from a book or DVD is asking for an injury. For a beginner (who is also going to classes) and for advanced students, this book is really excellent.

Great Yoga Book for Newbies!!!

Taking my first college yoga course and so far I'm hooked! This book is extremely helpful both in and out of the classroom. It's compact enough to carry with you in a tote, not bulky at all. The book itself has a great array of pictures with detailed pictographs imbedded showing step by step processes to guide you. The descriptions are effective and very conscience, nicely gets straight to the point. I definitely recommend this book for anyone, I believe newbies and even those with a bit more experience can benefit from this text. Even if you are aware of the moves and have a foundation, this text can definitely serve to avoid injury or serve as a good read for developing a great understanding of this long lasting practice!

Best for Intermediates and Advanced

Years ago, I had a slightly different, hardcover Iyengar yoga book by the Mehta family that covered moves for beginners a bit more extensively. In searching for a replacement, this version is more challenging for those of us inflexible types. Some of the inverted, supine, and balancing poses are way beyond my limited capacity. It's still worth poking through to find what will work for you. The Mehta's guidance of Iyemgar poses is invaluable to those needing an effective method of strengthening, toning, and stretching. I'm having a 3rd ankle surgery after months of pain, and am in desperate need of exercise prior to surgery. I only wish this book were spiral-bound for ease of use during practice, but I've had spiral-bound yoga volumes whose contents weren't nearly as useful as this one is. The clarity of writing by Silva, Mira, and Shyam Mehta is helpful; their photographs, plus clear instructions, provide great depictions of sensible and classic positions. Good luck!

About the Author

Mary Lee, Pharm. D., BCPS, FCCP, is Vice President, Chief Academic Officer for Pharmacy and Health Sciences Education, Midwestern University, and Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Chicago College of Pharmacy. Dr. Lee graduated with BS in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1976 and 1979, respectively, and completed a residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1977. She joined the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy in 1979, where she served as director of the drug information center and then clinical pharmacist to the urological surgery service at the hospital. In 1985, she was promoted to associate professor and from 1985-1990, she served as assistant dean of student affairs. In 1994, she became associate dean of Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy; and in 1998, she became dean. She served as dean of the College from 1998 through 2006.

Dr. Lee has published over 100 research manuscripts, book chapters, review articles, and short reports in peer-reviewed publications. She has served as an elected officer on the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Board of Regents, chair of the Clinical Section, American Pharmaceutical Association, Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science, and as chair or member of numerous committees of APhA, ACCP, and state pharmacy associations. She is considered an expert on pharmacological issues in urological diseases, has earned board certification in pharmacotherapy, has won numerous teaching awards, and is an invited speaker for many national and international meetings.

A comprehensive anthology of decision making frameworks

Binda Zane's effort is a concise and straight-to-the point analysis of the human behaviour under stressing situations, and how to overcome them with logical frameworks. The actionable and succint points he makes more than make up for the terse storytelling. I found myself wondering on my past decisions while reading this book, and I'm already planning to approach my next project meeting with some Delphi Method... Wish me luck!
