Splendid -- solid research, imaginatively elaborated.

THE last word on Rhapsody in Blue. Written for non-music-techies and the general public alike, Banagale traces the route of the Rhapsody from novelty to iconic piece of Americana. It's a combination of history, musical analysis, and really imaginative research. Unlike all others of Gershwin's concert works, the Rhapsody was an arrangement from the beginning, and its transition to icon depended to a great extent on its various arrangments. The two most famous are both by Ferde Grofe -- one for "jazz band," one for symphony orchestra. Banagale untangles (especially in the jazz band version) what Grofe contributed -- far beyond simply following Gershwin's indications in the score. He also examines other arrangements: The Whiteman band 78 recordings, dance-band arrangements, two fabulous arrangements for the Ellington band (one by Ellington, one by Billy Strayhorn), Earl Hines's solo meditations on the Rhapsody, Leonard Bernstein's cuts in *all* his recordings of the Rhapsody, the Rhapsody sequence in the Gershwin biopic starring Robert Alda, and others, including the United Air Lines ad campaign. Banagale provides a list of "resources," available on the internet, so you can actually hear all these versions (or most of them) -- a brilliant idea.
